Dr. Peter Fenner

Awareness is not something we create, improve, or possess. It is the open, contentless presence in which all experience appears, and from which nothing is ultimately separate.

In Their Own Words

A few reflections from Peter

What first drew you to explore your inner life?

From a very young age, I was drawn into the experience of observing myself and others, rather than being unconsciously pulled into the activities people were playing out. I sensed that something different was happening for me. Awareness felt either like an extremely well-kept secret, or like something most people had not yet noticed. This led me into direct contact with the mind.

I am currently interested in how nondual awareness can be revealed through dialogue, education, and even new technologies, without turning it into a doctrine, technique, or belief system.

What we are looking for is not elsewhere. The difficulty is not that awareness is absent, but that we keep searching for it as though it were something to find.

Resting as This without needing to add anything, remove anything, or make experience different from how it is.

Quietness, spacious conversation, and remembering that not every question needs to be answered.

Open sky. Also the inner space where the need to arrive somewhere simply relaxes.

The Prajnaparamita teachings, especially the Heart Sutra, and the Madhyamaka tradition of Nagarjuna have deeply shaped my understanding. Mahamudra and Dzogchen have also been central in showing how awareness can be recognized directly, without effort or elaboration.

“Rely on the definitive (the unknowable This) – not on the interpretable. (everything else).”

Begin gently. You do not need to manufacture a special experience. Simply notice what is already here before you try to improve, understand, or change it.

Biography

Bio

Peter Fenner, Ph.D., is a nondual teacher, author, and founder of Timeless Wisdom. His work blends the transformative architectures of Madhyamaka, Mahamudra, Dzogchen, and other nondual wisdom traditions in a seamless and organic way. Serene spaciousness opens up as a function of deep unfindability inquiry. Students often appreciate the smooth, precise, and deeply experiential way this transmission unfolds.

For 20 years he taught Asian religions and philosophy full-time at Deakin University. For many years, Peter has taught internationally, offering retreats, trainings, dialogues, and mentoring in the recognition of nondual awareness.  He is the author of several books, including Radiant Mind, Natural Awakening, and The Edge of Certainty. His teaching emphasizes the possibility of resting in awareness without needing to construct, improve, or attain anything.

Among his contributions to contemporary nonduality are:

  • the development of a narrative form of unfindability inquiry especially suited to therapy, group work, and individual mentoring;
  • a train-the-trainer course through which he has taught therapists and meditation teachers how to bring nonduality more centrally and precisely into their practice and facilitation;
  • the free-form blending of meditative stillness and unfindability dialogue; and
  • a detailed meta-analysis of the origins, movements, and structure of his own approach.
  • his pioneering work in nondual psychotherapy.
